Elliott’s Skateland Building

Elliott’s Skateland Building

Two businesses burn 24 years apart which occupied the same lot

Many of you remember the building in the photo above as “Skate Land”, which was owned and operated by J.D. Elliott from the late 1950s through the very early 1970s. By the time this photo was taken in March of 1973, the skating rink had closed and a new business named “Shibley’s Fabric Center” had opened in the same building. This building was located on Hwy 27 to the north of Tony’s Drive In. In August of 1981, the building was totally destroyed by fire. At the time of the fire, it was still a fabric store, however by then the name had been changed to the “House of Fashion”. Fast forward twenty-four years, another business named M&L Custom Cabinetry was located on this exact same lot where the old skating rink/fabric store once was located.  On the evening of July 27, 2005, the cabinet shop was destroyed by fire after being struck by lightning.
