Rhea High School’s Joe Paul-In Memory

Joe Allen Paul was a 14 year old student and football player at Rhea County High School in August of 1985, when he died from injuries he received in a motorcycle accident. Around 11:45 am on August 14, Joe was traveling east on Hwy 30 in the Old Washington Community when the motorcycle he was riding crossed the center line and collided with a truck which was traveling west on Hwy 30.  Joe was taken by Rhea Ambulance to the Rhea County Hospital and later transferred to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga where he died on August 15, 1985. Funeral services for Joe were held on August 17, in the chapel of Sawyers Funeral Home. He was laid to rest in the Spring City Memory Gardens. Rhea County High School honors Joe Paul’s memory by awarding the “Twelfth Man Award” yearly to a deserving Rhea High Football Player.
