Carver High School Teacher Dies In Class

A Carver high school teacher became suddenly ill and died in the classroom Thursday morning September 17, 1964, around 10 am. Mrs. Marianne Beechman, 42-year-old teacher, became sick without warning while teaching a morning science class and fell to the floor. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Rhea County Hospital. Superintendent of Schools T.F. Guthrie immediately dismissed classes for the remainder of the day and on Friday. He said the school would meet for classes on Saturday, September 26th to make up the lost time. Marvin T. Melton, 33-year-old graduate of Knoxville College from Sweetwater, was hired to fill the deceased teacher’s position until the next school board meeting was held in October of 1964. Her funeral was held on September 20, 1964, at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, afterwards she was laid to rest in the Kelly Cemetery.
