In memory of Rhea County Sheriff Carles “Junior Henderson

Carles “Junior” Henderson was born on March 31, 1935, to the Rev. Carles and Evelyn Henderson. Junior lived most of his life in Rhea County where he worked as a mechanic and later operated a used car dealership.

He was elected for Sheriff of Rhea County in 1976 to a two-year term. It was during his first term in office, in which the State of Tennessee changed the terms from two years to four years. He was then re-elected in 1978 to a four-year term.

Sheriff Henderson was the first Sherriff to implement the new standards set by the State of Tennessee in the early 1970’s. The Rhea County Jail also received certification during his term.

Sheriff Henderson’s brother Carroll also came on board as the Chief Deputy of the Department after the re-election win in 1978.

Sadly, Junior passed away on February 26, 2003, in East Pointe, Florida. He was laid to rest in the Summer City Cemetery.
